Mac, wtf is that?
That’s somewhat the typical reaction (or whatever the Spanish translation of that may be) that I seem to get whenever I talk about my Macs to people here in Argentina. Not to say that the vast majority here is ignorant to the wonders of Steve J’s company and products, there are a select few who seem to be “enlightened”, but they are rare and far between like a white colored Enzo Ferrari.
Currently I am trying earn a 4 year degree as a Graphic Designer by attending a University here. The vast majority of professors who I have met all run their Design Studios on Macs (and some PCs). So you see some people know good but for some other people it’s a different story…
“What do you mean your copy of Photoshop won’t run on my PC?”, “Do they have Office for that?”, and the mind blowing.. “Doesn’t run Windows OMGWTF!!”
So there I find myself pulling out the best 5 minute explanation of Mac vs. Pc that my decaying 24-year old braincells can spit out. Some of them kinda grasp it, others don’t. Now I am not trying to paint the people here as a mass of ignorant living/breathing animals. The guys and gals that are into Graphic Design/Multimedia creation know about the wonders of the Mac and swear by them.
The point that I am trying to make is that Apple’s presence and awareness here in Argentina sure is lacking and that needs to change. Blame it on their prohibitive price tag, or perhaps the lack of Apple retailers across the country. My guess that this is a Windows-friendly land (due to the easy piracy of..) and those of us who choose to “think different” will continue to be a selective few that will need to continue the “spreading of word”.
