Myspace vs Facebook? Fuck them both.
I was reading this article on forbes.com about how myspace users are flocking to facebook. I know this is going to piss off some people, but that’s fine. No offense to anyone, but fuck both websites. I know some actual people which use both services to truly communicate with some old friends and that’s fine (I guess). But most people tend to live and breathe these websites and form some sort of cult following out of it. They battle each other into trying to get as many “friends”. Both sites serve to be just a glorified high school popularity contest.
HINT: Most of the people befriending you on these sites aren’t really your friends!
When I’m asked if I have a myspace or facebook account and I reply “No.” I usually get the lost look bambi had when her mother was hunted. That was sad. But not as sad as when people continue with “How come you don’t have myspace/facebook?” To which I reply, “Because I have no need for it.” And they’re almost always lost for words. If I need to contact my friends I can either call, text, email, or even instant message them. Anything else is a waste of my time. I don’t want to be reunited with people from high school because I simply don’t want to and I’ve moved on. I, for the most part, could care less about what they’re up to, what annoying song they have on the their profile, or how many kids they have. If it so happens that I run into them in the street, at a bar, or wherever then that’s fine. But I’m not going to spend my valuable time on some website stalking people. Just not my style.
By the way, virb.com is pretty cool. The reason I say that is because it lends itself to more of a professional/artsy scene rather than the usual crowd seen in myspace or facebook. I still don’t see myself actively on it though.
