How come it’s so hard to get rid of things?

I’m not one to be considered a pack rat, at least I don’t consider myself to be. But as I continue to simplify and promote a minimalist approach to my life, I’ve noticed how much crap I actually have stored around that I need or should get rid of. Some things have been rather easy to lose, like bank statements from 2004, old computer parts, and forgotten notes from old girlfriends. Others however have been harder to emotionally detach myself from, like childhood toys and figurines, certain pieces of furniture, and other random personal articles.

There seems to be no specific pattern for my attachments. I can donate a perfectly good working older TV without a blink but struggle to get rid of my box of marbles from when I was 10 (matter of fact, they’re still here). I don’t know the reason but I guess some things mean more than others. Money has little to do with this decision making.

So that brought me to thinking why it’s so hard to get rid of things? I guess the longer you have something you subconsciously bind yourself more and more to it. Also the experiences you had with such objects makes it hard to give up (which explains why I still have my Nintendo). I think it’s worth getting rid of things you absolutely don’t need, but some deserve to stick with you for a little longer. If only to reminisce just a little.
